Nanotechnology And The Thermal Spray Process
A multidisciplinary branch of science, nanotechnology (as it applies to manufacturing) takes a look from an atomic level (or molecular level) at engineering. More precisely, however, on a nanoscale. One billionth of a meter is equal to one nanometer. Smaller yet, at approximately 1/10 of a nanometer, is an atom (just to give you some scale). For the engineering of an end product or part, exceedingly small bits of matter are needed. Between 2015 and 2020, it was expected that the market outlook for nanotechnology would grow at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 16.5%.
Clearly, nanotechnology is making a significant impact in engineering, the thermal spray process, and multiple industries across the globe. The nanoscale process or nanoscale materials are used in over 800 everyday products existing in the world today.
What Is It and Where Did It Originate?
A thermal spray coating system that is multicomponent and nanotechnology based provides high temperature strength against thermal shock and resistance to thermal cycling. It also offers resistance to oxidation, impact, and wear-based degradation. This nanotechnology-based process was developed originally to be used on steel strip production’s furnace rolls. It was utilized to prevent strip surface flaws (such as dimples) and because it was greatly resistant to contaminant pickup when applied to those furnace rolls.
Contained within the multi-structure of this coating system are proprietary sealing materials, an oxide ceramic top layer, and cobalt-based sub layers. Even at ultra-high temperatures, the coating maintains its integrity.
Nanotechnology and Manufacturing
Processes used by and products put out by manufacturers can be improved through nanomanufacturing. Not only does it create products that are lighter weight, smaller, and stronger, it enhances durability, improves efficiency, and cuts down on waste. Here is how all of that works…
Better Products:
- Materials that are nanoengineered are being used to make sensors, electronics, battery systems, and other automotive parts more efficient, cheaper, and cleaner.
- These coatings increase wear resistance and strength on machine parts.
- They are being added to motorcycle helmets, automobile bumpers, and numerous sporting goods to make them resilient, durable, and lightweight.
Improved Efficiency:
- Assembly lines are no longer required, and parts cannot be incorrectly fabricated – this means that machine set up programming is no longer necessary.
- This approach increases the risk of rework, lowers the cost of materials, and cuts down on production time.
- No assembly, fabrication, or machining is required in order to create finished products.
Less Waste:
- Wasted materials such as sawdust and shavings are reduced or eliminated.
